The Pretty Wild – ‘zero.point.genesis’ [Album Review]
Viral sensations The Pretty Wild deliver a nightmare-inducing collection of nu-metalcore lullabies on debut album ’zero.point.genesis’.
In our recent Cover Story, sisters Jyl and Jules Wylde described zero.point.genesis, the debut album from Las Vegas nu-metalcore viral sensations, The Pretty Wild, as more than just a collection of songs. Built around strong visuals and futuristic themes as much as genre-smashing dark-pop hooks and viral memes, zero.point.genesis had all the promise of being a huge, multi-layered album, but did the Las Vegas pair match those lofty promises?
Well, they waste no time in grabbing your attention as the album hurtles into opener ”Paradox”. A massive statement from the pair, it‘s the first time where you get a clear picture of the explosive musical cocktail that is The Pretty Wild. From polished metalcore to nightmarish pop passages and back again to a jarring blast of modern, electro-laced metal, the opener leaves you feeling like you‘ve just been thrown around for four minutes on a violent rollercoaster. The title track ups the ante further, and already the ease at which the pair match up pummelling metalcore with delicious alt-pop hooks is plain for all to see.
An album bristling with confidence, ”Living Ded” is the first time where the pair head down the poppier route, but their heavier side still rears its head midway through the track with a well-placed breakdown. By this point, the explanation by the pair about the amount of time poring over every aspect of their creative work really starts to become clear. Here you start to see how well-crafted the expansive, multi-layered, boundary-smashing sound is as the album starts to spread its creative wings. That continues through the infectiously dark “Button Eyes” as it sinks its hooks into your skull. A sinister, nightmarish songs, the duo jolt flawlessly between sickly-sweet pop vocals, innocent tra-la-las and punch-you-in-the-face breakdowns.
”Priestess” is a pure, throat-shredding rager as banks of orchestral effects build up a beefy, lurching metalcore assault over which the pair trade almost feral screams. Moments later, the pair are back trading more anthemic electro-metal melodies on ”Omens.” ”The Trial” jolts between those walls of polished, crunchy modern metal and modern-goth effects, while ”AFTERLIFE,” the recent single/collaboration with Magnolia Park, is another of those anthemic metalcore efforts that shine on this album.
The album wraps up with ”s Leepw ALKe R”, the track where this journey started for The Pretty Wild. Complete with that viral cough, the hit track is the icing on the cake for zero.point.genesis, an album which is as chaotic as it is calculated and as brutal as it is sweet and pristine.
All that remains is for you to settle in for this nightmare-inducing collection of stick-in-your-head, metalcore lullabies. Be warned, though, zero.point.genesis will scare you witless, smash your face in, then send you off to sleep, nervously clutching your pillow with one eye open.
