The Acacia Strain – ‘You Are Safe From God Here‘ [Album Review]
The Acacia Strain’s ’You Are Safe From God Here’ is a masterclass in extreme metal, terrifying lyrics, and unmatched heaviness.
It feels like only yesterday that The Acacia Strain dropped their third album, Continent, which instantly captured my heart and imagination above all the other metalcore at that time.
Whereas most bands of that ilk were relying on verse, hook, chorus, breakdown, repeat, The Acacia Strain didn’t conform to any blueprints and instead took a path of dominant, earth-shaking riffs, technical aggression and frightening lyrics. Seventeen years and eight albums later, The Acacia Strain still boasts all of those same attributes, but has added to and evolved their sound to incorporate so many new and interesting weapons into their arsenal.
You Are Safe From God Here. This isn‘t a metalcore record, and The Acacia Strain are no longer a metalcore band. They are blending elements of Death, Black, Doom, Sludge, Grind, Hardcore, Thrash… you name it! It‘s a diverse amalgamation of all the strings they have added to their bow over the years, concentrated into an exciting and often frightening style of celestial metal.
Lyrically, The Acacia Strain have always been a step above their peers, and this feels like the most channelled and targeted collection of songs they have put together to date. Exploring the darkest recesses of life, death and the hell that exists both here and below. It‘s a scornful examination of humanity and a heart-wrenching insight into a mind filled with hate and grief.
There‘s a real horror and gore to this album, which, although fundamental to its core, doesn’t go so over the top that it takes away from the incredible musicianship and expert structuring of the songs. This lineup of The Acacia Strain feels like the most cohesive and mature to date, and if at all possible, maybe the heaviest incarnation so far. A real sludge and muck slow churn is running throughout, that bursts and crashes into frantic hardcore blasts and ungodly vocals.
The bass sound on the breakdowns is like listening to a plane crash in slow motion, and the drum work is methodical and often unsettling. The foundations and identity of this band have been built over the years predominantly on the vision and skills of singer Vincent Bennett, who, for my money, has evolved into one of the most compelling and complete frontmen in his class. This album, however, although easily distinguishable by his now well-established barks and howls, feels like it has the supporting cast to really enhance and accentuate his many terrifying talents. A huge shout out also to some of the best mosh calls of the year on this record, including “PUT ME IN THE FUCKING GROUND” and “I DONT LOVE YOU,” which are set to some of the most monolithic breakdowns you will hear in 2025.
This album needs to be consumed as a full 37-minute body of work that gets bigger, heavier and more encapsulating as it unfolds. You Are Safe From God Here is a lifetime achievement and landmark victory for The Acacia Strain and will hopefully bring a new generation of fandom knocking at their door.
