Dark disco grooves come aplenty on Sylvia Black’s latest single, “Talking In Tongues.” The single is an eerie, new wave-inspired warning to those who might accidentally invite the spirits to take over. It’s a fun blend of different eras and influences, now with an accompanying music video.

The video features different shots of Sylvia performing the song, with a glittery discotheque vibe that alludes to the song’s new wave era influences. Both danceable and dark, the song will resonate with fans of more synthy indie music, along with the underground club crowd. But if you’re looking for a late-night headphone listen, it also suits that.

Commenting on the song, Sylvia states:

“It’s about one who has lost their agency by letting outward elements control them and deceive them. Or, a drunk bitch.”

The premiere of “Talking In Tongues” comes ahead of the release of Sylvia’s latest album, Shadowtime. The album, due out in the new year, is defined by its immersive soundscapes, joining together gothic textures and post-punk energy. There has been something of a revival of dark music recently, and Sylvia stands at the forefront of that movement. Shadowtime is adventurous and immersive, a record about finding beauty in ruin. Returning to California reminded her of the spirit and soul of her goth days of years gone by. As a youngster, Sylvia was a big fan of bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, New Order, and Killing Joke. She rediscovered the spirit of that musical movement and felt it come back through her. She also rediscovered the still very prevalent goth scene in LA. It all felt like a homecoming to her, both as a person and an artist.

Shadowtime is both a return to Sylvia Black’s roots and a step forward into new sounds and new flavours. She is excitedly embracing both the new and the old as she proceeds into a new chapter of her songwriting career.
