It’s been two years since Long Island hardcore crew Stray From The Path rolled through Leeds but, here we are, at a rammed Project House, as the band arrive for one of their final dates before bringing the curtain down on their time.

The Leeds hardcore community turned out en masse as well to give the band a memorable send-off as did three top quality support bands starting with London-based rock three-piece Calva Louise who might not sit stylistically on the same shelf as the three other bands but the likes of ”Hate In Me” rattle around the room and get the appreciative response they deserve.

Next up are Graphic Nature who take the energy created by Calva Louise and crank it up a few notches with a brutal set of nu-metal tinged metalcore. Bludgeoning through ”Locked In” and the appropriately titled ”Killing Floor”, Graphic Nature quickly turn the packed floor into something akin to a battlezone with the first few bodies spitting over the barrier.

Aussie nu-metalcore wrecking ball Alpha Wolf give the crowd one opportunity to whip up the energy with their bouncy, moshy grooves, and this heaving room grabs the opportunity with both hands. Smashing through a nine-song set, the Aussie toss out retina-burning, pit-ready bangers like ”Pretty” setting up the mood ready for an emotional, unforgettable finale.

Twenty-five minutes later, and as Stray From The Path tear onto the stage into opener ”Kubrick Stare”, it’s almost like someone has lit a fuse under the dancefloor. Bodies crash around as ”First World Problem Child” and ”Shot Caller” crank up the levels even further. By now, the dancefloor is a mess as Stray from the Path frontman, Andrew Dijorio bounces around the stage overseeing the chaos.

Midway through the set, the frontman makes a passionate speech to the crowd, it’s the kind of speech about the community, the inclusivity and the welcoming nature of the hardcore community, that he has made many times before, but as the band heads ferociously towards their final shows, it felt like it was delivered with an extra edge tonight. Fourteen songs later, and as the Leeds crowd pay their final respects to one of the most underrated bands on the scene, a raging ”Fortune Teller” wraps up this unforgettable, emotional night for both Stray From The Path and an exhausted room of fans.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
