Miss J – ‘ROCKHOUSE’ [Album Review]
The New York singer’s new album, ‘ROCKHOUSE,’ delivers a full-sized, wide-open sound, highlighted by beaucoup oomph.
A native of New York, singer-songwriter Miss J, aka Jacqueline Real, recently released her new album, ROCKHOUSE, a nine-track collection of tracks blending rock energy, blues, and funk with the thump of house rhythmic pulses and hints of EDM.
Miss J says, “Why keep genres in their own lanes when they hit harder together?”
Multi-talented, Miss J is also an actress and short film producer. Past musical collaborations include Femke, David Ray Stevens, John Maxwell Hefley, Kareem Thompson, Danny Gold, and Peter Kooper.
Entry points on ROCKHOUSE include the title track, a big, enthusiastic, brief intro to the entire album featuring searing guitar licks and expansive, braying brass. A personal favorite because of its bluesy textures and Miss J’s sensual vocals, “Numbing The Pain” ebbs and rises on luscious, shimmering colors, followed by heavy guitars and blatting horns.
On “Scorned Woman,” a swampy, country tune, Miss J shows off the depth and dimension of her ooh la la voice – growling, purring, grinding. Whereas the down-and-dirty melody of “IDGAF” sniggers with nasty blues surfaces as Miss J struts a voice reminiscent of Steve Marriott.
Brimming with dark, slinky coloration topped by a luminous layer of sonic frosting, “22424” narrates how infidelity and heartache can lead to emotional restoration and self-worth.
“Leave It All Behind” demonstrates just how contagious funk can be – rumbling bassline, braying brass, glowing harmonies, and the deliciously edgy vocals of Miss J. When the elements merge, the music rolls over listeners like a freight train.
The New York singer’s new album, ROCKHOUSE, delivers a full-sized, wide-open sound, highlighted by beaucoup oomph.
