King of Cups – “Lighthouse” [Song Review]
“Lighthouse” is like a gentle assurance, a hand on one’s shoulder, reminding that despite all of life’s chaos and unpredictability, a few songs still have the ability to lead you back to firm ground.
To a certain segment of the internet-raised generation, the explosion of pop-emo at the end of the 2000s didn’t really fade away. It only went underground, patiently waiting for the right bands to open it again. King of Cups seems to be fully aware of that connection. With their latest single “Lighthouse,” from their upcoming album Elemental, they are reinvigorating the zeitgeist of that period: the open and inviting melodies, the totally honest lyrics, and the vibe of a song being a safe consort when everything else is shaking.
Elemental is a unique concept. Each song on the record is intended to represent a specific element, where “Lighthouse” stands to embody the element of Earth. The song’s opening guitar riff is clear, direct, and stunningly expansive. It’s the type of hook that lodges itself in your mind without even asking for it. The chorus is almost a trip back in time as it takes on a sort of larger-than-life confidence, and its soaring melody is definitely made for anyone who loves a good rock anthem.
Everything in the song points toward stability. The song serves as an ode to a person whose presence carves out a sense of order when everything else slides off-centre. It works because the song treats that grounding force as essential: a guiding light and a lifeline.
And that is precisely the point where “Lighthouse” makes its most effective impact. It’s like a gentle assurance, a hand on one’s shoulder, reminding that despite all of life’s chaos and unpredictability, a few songs still have the ability to lead you back to firm ground.
