Montreal’s MTelus hosted a big welcome back party on Thursday night. It has been a few years since Coeur de Pirate has graced one of our stages. She was back in force, with a new album in hand and an adoring crowd that was excited to be reunited with their favourite singer. The Montreal show was the first in a short trek of Canadian cities. It provides a quick chance to get out and see some familiar faces. There were certainly more than a few of those in the crowd on this night. She seemed to be waving to someone new every time she looked out into the crowd. It is also the perfect opportunity to introduce those fans to her new album. Cavale was released back in September, and we were treated to the entire album.

Before getting any further, a special mention is to be made for the opening act. We are witnessing the opening steps of Laraw on her journey. Pressed against the stage curtain, she treated the Montreal crowd to some wonderful musical moments. Her bio mentions that she expresses herself through the universal language of music. She certainly expressed herself to the sold-out crowd, who really enjoyed her set. I particularly enjoyed “Heartbreak Club,” a track off of an EP released back in March. In a short time, she made a big impression. Keep your eyes and ears open for her.

Up next, Coeur de Pirate made her long-awaited return to a Montreal stage. It has been a rough couple of years as she dealt with some medical issues.  Once she was back on the stage, it was like she never left. Coeur de Pirate shouted a quick “Bonsoir Montréal!” after opening the concert with “Laisse moi pleurer.” It immediately broke whatever ice there may have been.

Coeur de Pirate kept the momentum going with “Un autre regret,” another track from Cavale.  An early crowd pleaser took place with an older hit, “Drapeau blanc.” The songs also featured several dance interludes.

Coeur de Pirate concerts are like a science experiment. Take one part voice and mix with one part performance art. The result is a concert experience unlike all others. Totally original and unforgettably memorable. Coeur de Pirate performed the rest of the songs from Cavale, along with a generous portion of her other hits. Coeur de Pirate thanked the fans for having always been there over her career and for their support over the last few years. She said that the relationship they have shared has been the greatest of her life. After looking over all of the smiling faces, it was easy to see that the feeling was mutual.

After this short Canadian tour, Coeur de Pirate will be heading over to Europe before making a Montreal return early next summer. I’m sure that everyone in attendance this evening has already marked the date in their calendar.
