Circus Mind, the indie-rock funk collective, unveils their sixth single since May of this year. Entitled “What a Mess,” the song finds the band delving into contemplative territory – their first ballad.

Songwriter and frontman Mark Rechler shares, “I guess I was pissed off when I wrote this one. It’s just a frustrating time to exist. We’re being intentionally divided and manipulated. I’m worried about the future. I’m just pleading for people to come together, now more than ever.

It’s a song about the fragmented nation Americans now live in – a nation separated by political viewpoints, violence, misinformation, and chaos. The lyrics form a plea, a kind of prayer for compassion and harmony.

“What a Mess” rolls out on a piano and guitar-driven melody that offers a delicious swaying motion accented by brass tones and tints of drawling timbres. Gravelly vocals capture the feeling of frustration and fear generated by the status quo and the longing for something fresh and different. Although the mood of the song is dark, elusive tendrils of light and hope linger in the corner.
