Just when you thought the District couldn’t get any bolder, brasher, or more blazingly brilliant, LA’s own interstellar funk collective Brassroots District has dropped a sonic meteor called “Aim High.” This is no background elevator soul – this is front-of-the-line, tear-up-the-carpet, sweat-through-your-bell-bottoms music. And if you ain’t ready, you better get there fast.

Out now via For The People Records (and if you don’t know, you will), “Aim High” is the latest 45 from a group that’s less a band and more a full-fledged movement. With Ursa Major and Copper Jones tag-teaming lead vocals like tag-team preachers at a midnight revival, this track doesn’t just encourage you to believe in yourself – it practically dares you to do so. And if you don’t? Well, the bassline’ll drag you onto the floor anyway.

The single is a preview of what’s shaping up to be the most anticipated LP of 1974: Brassroots District, hitting stores January 29th, 1974. Rumour has it that the pressing plants have already been backed up from pre-orders alone. No wonder. If you’ve seen these cats live (and lord help you if you haven’t), you know they don’t play at you – they play through you.

And speaking of live shows: Jewel’s Catch One, already a Koreatown hotbed of culture, community, and chrome-shined dance floors, will host the band’s eight-night album release residency next month. That’s February 7th, 13th, 20th, 28th, and March 7th, 14th, 20th, and 28th for those still fumbling with your wall calendars.

Now let’s talk history: Last year, this crew opened for Sly & the Family Stone in a parking lot. That’s right, in a parking lot. And when Epic Records tried to mess with the formula – demanding Ursa Major be dropped in favour of a “more conventional frontman” – Copper Jones ripped the contract in half on stage. Let me say that again for the folks in the back: he tore the deal in half in front of a sold-out crowd. That kind of loyalty doesn’t just make a band – it builds a nation.

The District isn’t just bringing the funk. They’re building a family – on stage, in the studio, and in the streets. Their message is clear: believe in yourself, fight for your people, and dance until the soles fall off your platforms.

From Joshua Tree desert sessions to Preservation Hall spirituals to Crenshaw street festivals, these groove messengers have been sharpening their sound like a blade. With “Aim High,” they’ve got it aimed right at the soul – and they never miss.

So go on and dial 323-596-1973 to get your tickets to Catch One. And remember: this ain’t just a concert, baby. It’s a community in motion. And it’s 1974 – we need that more than ever.
