The Moss – ‘Free Ride’ [EP] [Album Review]
Cutting across a variety of genres – jazz, funk, rock – on ‘Free Ride,’ The Moss takes listeners on a roller coaster ride of emotions.
Alt-rock/indie-rock outfit The Moss releases their new EP, Free Ride, a four-track collection of organic indie-rock that exhibits why they have amassed more than 75 million streams.
The Moss is made up of Tyke James (vocals, guitar), Willie Fowler (drums), and Tyler Harris (guitar). As The Moss’s primary songwriter, Tyke James writes about his personal experiences and passions, resulting in surprisingly optimistic songs.
The Moss has performed at festivals, including Bottlerock, Levitate, Ohani, and Paradies with Briston Maroney. The band recently announced their spring 2026 headlining tour.
Entry points on Free Ride include the opening track, “Darkness,” a song exploring the idea of episodic gloom in life. Yet gloom need not be overwhelming; hope and love can carry you through the shadows.
The low-slung throb of “Darkness” on the verses elevates to dynamic textures on the chorus, providing surfaces of luminosity in the midst of the obscuring mist.
On “Higher,” the band offers a grimy, funky rhythm topped by a braying organ that cuts through with lusciously slinky tones. James’s tight vocals complement the harmonics with ripe timbres, asking the revealing question: “Am I getting ahead of myself?”
Probably the best track on the EP, the closing song “Oasis” rides a light, bouncy rhythm as a chopsticks-like piano juxtaposes against a darker, heavier guitar. Then the song shifts to a piano-driven, almost prog-rock melody, exposing a kind of beguiling contentment.
According to James, “‘Oasis’ is a song about finding someone at a point in time who makes you feel seen. It’s about how necessary but fleeting it is to have someone to talk to.”
