Older Future – ‘The Captains’ [Album Review]

Older Future, the musical project of engineer and synth designer Alon Yaish, unveils his album, The Captains, a nine-track collection of electronic music featuring heavy synths, thumping beats, and a theme of self-awareness.

Older Future explains, “This album is a reflection of ongoing conversations I’ve had and still have with myself. It explores a range of personal themes: past trauma, aggression, depression, growing up, aging, bullying, admiration, and more. Each track carries its own meaning, balancing between abstract emotion and concrete experience.”

Entry points on The Captains include “Mitch,” with its kaleidoscopic intro, low-slung syncopated rhythm, and swirling, futuristic layers of synths. Filtered harmonies give the vocals a digital tang that fits the melody.

There’s a skittering, almost nervous edge to “The nerd.” Dreamy synths ride on a syncopated, industrial-lite beat. Imbuing the melody with glitchy, trembling energy. A personal favorite because of its back-and-forth motion, “Waking up at dawn” shimmers on oscillating tones that infuse the tune with ghostly sonic apparitions.

“Supersong – Keep my job edit” rolls out on gentle waves of dreamy electronic textures atop tight, crisp percussion as a graceful piano gives the melody a palette of indulgent colors.

“New plug” closes the album off with drifting, stylish aplomb. A pulsating, rounded rhythm supports psychedelic-lite, at times discordant, elastic tones, while distant vocal harmonies add consecrated flavors.

Horizontal grooves and reserved vocals intersect like Legos on The Captains, instilling the tracks with a delicious gestalt.
