Mary Chicken Soup And Rice – “Growing” [Song Review]

Los Angeles-based musician and filmmaker Mary Chicken Soup And Rice, aka Matthew Dunehoo, unveils his new single/music video, “Growing,” a track lifted from his recently released album, Que Linda.

The name – Marcy Chicken Soup And Rice – was inspired by the animated special Really Rosie, a collaboration between Carole King and author Maurice Sendak.

Originally from Shawnee, Kansas, Dunehoo later moved to New York City, then back to Kansas, and then to Los Angeles.

He explains, “I’m a grunge kid raised on alternative terrestrial radio, a college DJ schooled in the value of digging for deeper cuts. Never punk enough for the punks, artsy enough for the artists, or straight enough for the normies.”

“Growing” rolls out on dark, growling tones marinating in buzzing, droning textures. A heavy, mid-tempo beat gives the tune the feeling of orphic muscle, a bit eerie and portentous. Dreamy, chancy vocals imbue the lyrics with tribal vibes. Imagine Marilyn Manson covering Godsmack’s “Voodoo” and you’ll have an idea of what “Growing’ sounds like.

Primordial in a provocative, irresistibly sensual way, “Growing” conveys a wonderfully labyrinthine structure that’s addictive.
