Jess Rae just released her first full length album, No Straight Lines. It’s a tasteful blend of roots, pop, and soul that feels honest and real. The nine-track record shows a more personal side of Jess, who many fans know from the award-winning band Sweet Alibi. Her solo project is an outlet for her to express herself in an open way, and we get just that with No Straight Lines.

The opening song “Funny Way,” kicks things off in a chill yet upbeat manor and sets the tone for what’s to come. Jess’s vocal character takes the center stage as she sings, “You got a funny way of showing your love.” It’s catchy, simple, and heartfelt.

Track four, “Good Songs,” brings a steady rhythmic feel and some well-placed textural electric guitar work. It’s the kind of tune that would pair well with a drive through the mountains. Jess sings, “How do all the good songs feel?”—they feel like this one.

The album closes with “Furby Street.” It’s a slower, more emotional piano-led track. With lines like, “If these walls could talk, I think it’s best that they don’t,” Jess leaves listeners with something to think about as the music fades.

No Straight Lines is full of heart and soul. Jess Rae keeps things real, using her strong voice and honest lyrics to tell stories about love, growth, and finding yourself along the way.
