Diane Hubka & The Sun Canyon Band Premiere Their Rendition of “If I Could Only Win Your Love”
Diane Hubka & The Sun Canyon Band premiere their version of “If I Could Only Win Your Love” from their new ‘Moon Over Larrabee’ album.
These days, positivity and optimism feel like they are in short supply, so we should be thankful that we have artists like Diane Hubka & The Sun Canyon Band who can spread a little joy. Hubka and her band are pleased to be debuting their new single, “If I Could Only Win Your Love,” from their latest album, Moon Over Larrabee.
The song features a guest appearance from the one and only Albert Lee, widely considered one of the 20th century’s most innovative guitar players. On “If I Could Only Win Your Love,” Lee plays the mandolin and also supplies backing vocals. It’s one of a few cover songs that are featured on the new album, as Hubka douses each song with her trademark energy and enthusiasm.
Explaining the background behind the song and bringing Lee on board to record with, Hubka tells us:
“‘If I Could Only Win Your Love’ is a classic country ballad by The Louvin Brothers, which I learned from listening to Emmylou Harris’ recording of it. In fact, I learned several of these songs from watching videos of her playing concerts with her Hot Band in the 1970s, of which Albert Lee was a member. So imagine how thrilled I was when we learned that Albert would be able to play on our recording!
“I remember the session well. Of course, Albert came with his signature Music Man guitar to add his unmistakable guitar sounds to our recording. But he also brought his 100-year-old Gibson mandolin, which he played on ‘If I Could Only Win Your Love,’ and also sang harmony vocals! I love the simplicity of this song, and it has a really pretty melody.”
Due for release on October 22nd, Moon Over Larrabee was inspired by moonlit scenes where Hubka and her band found their beginnings, near the original Tower Records located on Sunset Boulevard. There are pieces of the legendary music scene in nearby Laurel Canyon featured throughout this record. It’s an upbeat combination of folk, Americana, old-time rock n’ roll, swing, country, and blues. It features six original songs and six covers, as Hubka and her band bring new life to some well-known standards.
Ultimately, Moon Over Larrabee is a unique record, particularly in this day and age. There is no longer the same level of appreciation for the components of early rock n’ roll and Americana music. Hubka has made sure to pay her respects to the music that she grew up with and made her into the artist she is today. The record is both unique and authentic, in the same way that popular music was in the ’50s and ’60s. It also serves as proof that the spirit of Laurel Canyon is being kept alive and well by artists like Hubka, dedicated and faithful to the roots of the music that made them into the artists they are today.
