Western noir singer-songwriter and filmmaker Dennis Hauck releases his new A/B side single, “Natural Heart” and “Nature of the Beast.”

Talking about the songs, Hauck says, “I took pretty much the same approach to recording these songs as I do with my film projects, which is to stay as analog as possible; capture it all live on the day; and not rely too much on post-production trickery.

Hauck began playing in punk bands in high school and making indie-rock bedroom recordings. Then his focus shifted to film. Later, Hauck became known for his film, Too Late, with John Hawkes in the starring role.

“Natural Heart” rolls out on a strumming guitar topped by spoken-word lyrics, vaguely reminiscent of Johnny Cash. As the melody takes shape, the song projects volatile country music energy. Twangy guitars and a resonant, round piano give the tune a big, imposing feel.

On “Nature of the Beast – alternate version,” Hauck reinterprets his 2023 song, slowing it down and adding a plaintive piano, sad strings, and an overall melancholic flavor. As Hauck narrates the tale in his spoken vocals, drifting, sensual guitars infuse the harmonics with dark, voluptuous surfaces. A crying violin emphasizes the wistful quality of the lyrics.

With his latest A/B side release, Dennis Hauck comes off like a first-rate outlaw country band with a refreshing sound.
