Singer-songwriter Dan Hubbard is back with “Sad Eyes,” his first new song since 2021 and it proves well worth the wait. The track has a smooth, soulful feel with honest lyrics and an easy vibe that takes listeners on an enjoyable ride down a river of song.

The song was inspired by something his wife, Kaetlyn, once told him—that she loved his “sad eyes” when they first met. That concept turned into a song about wanting real connection with someone. Instead of chasing something out of a Hallmark movie, the lyrics talk about two people finding comfort and laughter together, embracing the imperfections of life.

Musically, “Sad Eyes” is a fresh step for Hubbard. It’s the first time he’s used drum samples, taking inspiration from artists like Holly Humberstone and Leon Bridges. The track builds with stabbing piano parts, a smooth guitar solo, and a sonically rewarding chorus that gives the track a rich feel to its production.

The single is the first release from Hubbard’s upcoming EP, Vol 1: Letting Go, set to drop shortly in October of 2025. It’s the first half of a two-part project that leans into R&B, soul, and pop sensibilities. Three songs from the EP have already made it to the semifinals of the 2024 International Songwriting Competition.

After 20 years, nine albums, and countless shows, Hubbard is still creating and giving listeners something fresh, and “Sad Eyes” proves he’s not afraid to try something new.

Listen to “Sad Eyes,” out now, and stay tuned for the upcoming EP.
