With the release of his new single “Storm Flight” and a new concept album Chronicles of the Residuum: The Age of Destruction, Robert Ratcliffe is quickly establishing himself as one of the most ambitious new voices in science fiction-inspired music.

A lifelong sci-fi fan, Robert has channelled his deep love for the genre into a decade-long passion project—crafted on a twelve-year-old laptop and driven by imagination and determination. Drawing on influences from Hans Zimmer, Rick Wakeman, Aphex Twin, The Prodigy, and more, he’s created a cinematic, post-apocalyptic world as immersive as it is sonically bold.

Speaking to V13, Robert shares his ten most iconic sci-fi movie scenes, moments that not only defined his love of the genre but also helped shape the sound and story of the Residuum. From classic blockbusters to cult favourites, these scenes reflect the depth of his fandom and reveal the cinematic DNA behind his visionary debut.

1. Star Wars: A New Hope – Luke destroys the Death Star

“One of the greatest Sci-Fi space battles sees Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance staging an all-out attack on the Death Star, culminating with its destruction as Luke fires his torpedoes into the reactor of the giant planet destroyer moments before running out of time.”

2. Terminator 2 – T-1000 Pursuit

“The T-1000 Terminator pursues John, Sarah and the T-800 through the hospital in a thrilling chase scene in which we see the T-1000 morphing from its liquid metal state – the CGI effects look great even today.”

3. Aliens – Ripley versus the Alien Queen

“After escaping from planet LV-426 and seemingly safe, Ripley is forced to defend herself and the other survivors from the huge and terrifying Alien Queen, which has managed to stow away aboard the Colonial Marine dropship. A tense battle ensues with Ripley using one of the exosuit machines to fight and subdue the creature before ejecting it into space through an airlock.

4. Interstellar – The Tesseract

“Cooper enters the black hole and is rescued by advanced beings who create a three-dimensional representation of their five-dimensional space. In this space, Cooper can see and interact with the past and communicate with his young daughter using gravity – it’s a great twist to the story.”

5. Predator – Arnie versus the Predator

“Towards the end of the film, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character, Dutch, comes face-to-face with the Predator in a tense game of cat and mouse. After being camouflaged for most of the film, the Predator finally reveals itself, taking off its mask to show one of the greatest creature designs of all time.”

6. Independence Day – Destruction of the Cities

“Alien ships appear over the major cities of the world before unleashing a devastating attack that destroys a large part of civilisation. The CGI effects make this one of the most awe-inducing scenes in all of Sci-Fi.”

7. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace – Duel of the Fates

“The climax of The Phantom Menace sees the Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi come up against Sith Lord Darth Maul and his two-bladed lightsaber, resulting in the death of both Qui-Gon and Darth Maul. The fight is underscored by John Williams’s epic “Duel of the Fates”, which adds greatly to the tension.”

8. A Quiet Place – Basement Finale

“Most people remember the scene with the nail, but the climax of the film serves up one of its tensest scenes, as Evelyn and her family are trapped in the basement with one of the creatures. Finally discovering its weakness – sensitivity to high-frequency electronic noise – Regan uses feedback from her hearing aid to disorientate the creature before Evelyn takes it out with a shotgun.”

9. Mad Max: Fury Road – Toxic Storm

“The Mad Max series is filled with exhilarating chase scenes, but Fury Road’s pursuit of Furiosa and “the wives” offers something different, as the characters pass through a toxic storm with fantastic CGI effects that make you feel like you’re really in the heart of it.”

10. Alien – Chest Burster

“One of the most horror-inducing scenes in all of Sci-Fi, as a Xenomorph bursts from the chest of Kane in an explosion of blood.”

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
