Reese Van Riper – “The American Dream” [Video Review]
Steeped in the immediacy of jingoistic patriotism tinged with a subtle vehemence of protest, “The American Dream” hits the bullseye.
New Jersey-based swamp rock outfit Reese Van Riper unveils the music video for “The American Dream,” the title track from their five-track EP released in July of this year.
Produced by Kevin Antreassian (The Dillinger Escape Plan), who also mixed and mastered the EP, The American Dream merges fiery elements of gritty rock and swampy blues, exploring the underbelly of America’s national personality.
The American Dream EP follows Reese Van Riper’s gargantuan 30-track album, Sinners, Saints & Psychopaths.
Thrumming with raw, edgy energy meted out by chugging guitars, hints of psych-rock textures, and visceral rasping vocals, “The American Dream” lampoons the current status of the dream: the rich exploiting the poor, corporations peddling toxic foods, inflammatory engagement-driven media, pervasive gun violence, and power-hungry, corrupt government officials who cash in on crises and fear.
Directed by Mike Diebold, the video reflects a grindhouse sensibility wrapped in over-the-top kitsch, including mountains of double whoppers from McDonald’s, oodles of curly fries, Big Gulp drinks, and boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts.
The visuals cut from the band playing their instruments in a farmer’s field, dressed in gaudy red, white, and blue get-ups, to a man mesmerized by his television while devouring huge portions of fast food. Later, enraged by something on the TV, he points his pistol at the screen.
