Nile Rodgers & Chic Wrap Up Summer with an Unforgettable Party at The Piece Hall [Photos]

If there’s a better way to end a summer of shows at The Piece Hall than with the legendary Nile Rodgers and Chic, we’d like to see it. Their closing party was the ultimate celebration of another triumphant year for this iconic venue, which continues to go from strength to strength.

Across 36 shows spanning pop, rock, classical, nu-metal and more, the summer season had something for everyone – and this final disco extravaganza brought it all together in flamboyant style.

Acid Jazz pioneers The Brand New Heavies set the tone with a set full of nostalgic grooves, from “Dream on Dreamer” to the magnificent “Midnight at the Oasis”. Angela Ricci’s vocals soared while Andrew Levy’s bass drove the rhythm, and guitarist Simon Bartholomew, resplendent in gold trousers and a red feather boa, lit up the stage with his riffs and showmanship.

The headline performance was live-streamed for Nile’s We Are Family Foundation, meaning a global audience could share in the music and witness the striking beauty of The Piece Hall together.

Anyone who’s caught Rodgers before will recognise his trademark introductions – stories from the studio, tales of working with the stars – which by now can feel familiar. But for first timers, hearing how Madonna laid down the law in regard to picking her first single and album title (Like a Virgin) or how Beyoncé helped him add more Grammys to his already laden shelf is nothing short of fascinating.

And then, of course, there’s the music. With a career that spans five decades, Chic’s own considerable output and collaborations with Diana Ross, David Bowie, Madonna, Daft Punk, Beyoncé and more, Nile’s set is essentially a masterclass in modern pop history. Performed like one seamless medley, it was a relentless parade of hits – “Le Freak,” “We Are Family,” “Material Girl” and countless others – that had the courtyard dancing from start to finish.

As the final notes echoed into the night, it was clear this wasn’t just the end of another show, but the perfect finale to a remarkable summer. Nile Rodgers and Chic turned The Piece Hall into one big dancefloor – a fitting close to a season that celebrated the joy, diversity and sheer magic of live music.
