Rock, folk, and soul singer-songwriter and guitarist Michael Landgarten unveils his new album, Back To You, an exploration of his influences and life experiences.

Inspired by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Who, Otis Redding, and Chuck Berry, Landgarten began playing guitar in his teens. During the ’90s and ’000s, he wrote songs for and fronted The Doc Johnson Blues band and The Zeftrons.

Despite later moving on to other fields of endeavor, Landgarten couldn’t shed the attraction music had for him. He started writing songs and then went into the studio to lay down tracks for Back To You.

Of the 10 tracks that make up Back To You, must-listen-to songs include “Come Tomorrow,” a SoCal soft country-rock tune reminiscent of Don Henley, with its deliciously low-slung, pushing-lite rhythm and Henley-like vocals – evocative with charming, throaty timbres.

“You got a way of getting me / When I can see your face / Come tomorrow / Will you be with me? / Come be with me now.”

Whereas “But I Do” summons up memories of Tom Petty. Grainy, Southern rock guitars and hints of funk imbue the melody with an edgy feeling. Loose, raw percussion emphasizes the scruffy mood of the melody.

A personal favorite because of Landgarten’s tender vocals, “Just The Thought of You” kind of staggers forward, revealing the passage that love sometimes takes. Yet softly gleaming guitars smooth the harmonic flow with a gentle motion.

There’s an urgency to Landgarten’s vocals on “The Triangle,” another Tom Petty-like song. The bluesy “I Found Out” conjures up suggestions of Bob Dylan because of Landgarten’s delivery. After Landgarten’s anguished wail, the melody takes on an undulating flow highlighted by a crying steel guitar. This might be the best track on the album.

“Why didn’t you love me / I found out / Why didn’t you need me / I found out / Cuz you couldn’t feel your feelings.”

Back To You is one of those albums that grows exponentially better and better the more you sit and listen to it.
