Ida Maria – ‘Seven Deadly Sins +3’ [Album Review]
Norwegian punk rocker, Ida Maria, returns to confess her ‘Seven Deadly Sins +3’ via Indie Recordings. Join us as we confess what we thought of the album here…
“I want sex. I want drugs. I want rock and roll,” screams Norwegian punk rocker Ida Maria on the opening blast of her new record Seven Deadly Sins +3. “Lazy,” both lyrically and musically, sets the tone for Ida Maria’s new album, so strap yourself in for a high-energy, very unpredictable, rock and roll ride.
Describing Seven Deadly Sins + 3 as “a riotous, confessional, and deeply personal punk-rock opus that confronts our ugliest truths with blistering honesty and a wicked grin,” the punk rocker proves she doesn’t give a fuck about musical boundaries when track two, “Envy,” builds up from an almost country twang to a chaotic, brutal finale, summed up with Ida Maria’s gruff drawling as the track crashes to its conclusion.
Elsewhere on the album, as she blitzes through the simple yet infectious “I Pushed Too Hard,” the Norwegian punk again gives an attitude-filled performance. It’s also a performance which, given the diversity of styles, from outright punk rockers like opener “Lazy” to the quirky “More,” which again sees the album shift direction into a more rock and roll vibe.
The most exciting thing about this album is the unpredictability of it all. Seven Deadly Sins +3 is an album all about experiences, however crazy they are. It’s matched by a sound which confidently veers between pure punk rock to dark-hearted country, to stomping rock n’ roll. You just never know what is around the next corner.
Confident and brazen about her sins and experiences, while this is very much a confessional album, it’s also one that, after a career of over two decades, doesn’t hide in the corner ashamed of those confessions. Taking that into consideration, if you don’t like unfiltered, sex, drugs, rock n’ roll poetry, then Seven Deadly Sins+3 probably isn’t the album for you.
It is an album where the creator doesn’t hold back. She doesn’t cower away, and she certainly doesn’t mind screaming “fuck you” in your face when needs must. Seven Deadly Sins +3 is a raw collection of songs from the body and mind of someone who has lived it, survived it and is now ready to tell those tales. Like I said at the start, strap in for one hell of a ride.
