Following last night’s Piece Hall party with Glasgow rockers Texas, it was the turn of fellow Scots Travis to take over this wonderful corner of Yorkshire. Again, another band that rose to fame in the ’90s, Travis brought their slice of Glaswegian indie to Halifax, and as they worked through their set, it almost felt like they were providing the perfect soundtrack for this balmy Saturday night.

Kicking things off with “Bus,” the opening number from their 2024 album L.A.Times, Travis quickly followed that up with “Driftwood” from 1999’s album The Man Who and “Love Will Come Through” from 2003’s 12 Memories album. Plucking three tracks from their current album, “Bus,” “Alive” and “Raze The Bar,” like Texas the night before, Travis made sure that longtime fans got a career-spanning set, although cramming ten albums’ worth of fan favourites into a 19-song set was always going to be a tough call.

Looking around another packed-out night at the Piece Hall, you realise that although there have been some truly rowdy nights in this magnificent courtyard over the years, tonight wasn’t going to be one of them, but that just isn’t Travis’ schtick. Fran Healy is an engaging frontman for the band. While he doesn’t have the bar room banter of the previous night’s Glaswegian, Sharleen Spiteri, Healy does hold a special connection with the Travis fans, the majority of whom you feel have been with the band since day one.

Heading to the end with “As You Are and “Flowers In The Window” before revisiting 1999s The Man Who album for the final offering of the night, “Why Does It Always Rain On Me?,” Travis signed off this Glasgow takeover of Yorkshire with a polished performance and a strengthening of that unbreakable bond with their fans.

Our photographer, Graham Finney Photography, brought back this photo gallery from the gig. You can also check out the Travis setlist below.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
