Haute couture, or high fashion, began in Paris in 1858, when Charles Worth started retailing ‘off the rack’ coats, dresses, and silk accessories. Empress Eugenie purchased a dress from Worth, and since she was who she was, women of means followed her example.

Worth single-handedly made fashionable clothing a new kind of religion, and he was its high priest. Copycats followed Worth’s example, and Paris soon boasted numerous fashion boutiques. Designers like Worth were called “courtiers.”

Enter New York-based interdisciplinary artist Skylar Caeles, a cutting-edge courtier, whose creations span 3D modelling and digital fabrication with hand-finished couture techniques. As part of CHRISHABANA studio, she contributed bespoke pieces for Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter tour, as well as Missy Elliott’s performance at Coachella and Harry Lennix’s appearance on the red carpet at the Tony Awards.

As the founder of CAELES, a studio focused on wearable objects and accessories, Caeles created her trendy Snowflake rings, which were launched via Retail Pharmacy. The blue colorway version of the Snowflake ring sold out. In addition, her capstone 3D-printed eyewear received features in elite fashion outlets, including AVNT and Highsnobiety.

Other unique projects include Angelvision and Caeles’ Houndstooth Heels, 3D-printed platform heels inspired by animal skeletons and canine teeth.

Talking about the heels, Caeles says:

“My very first attempt at 3D-printed footwear. One of my proudest 3D printed creations. When I created these, I felt like I could really make anything.”

According to Caeles, her 3D-printed conceptual eyewear called Angelvision, with cherubs occluding the wearer’s eyes, “Force the wearer to rely on their ‘guardian angels’ for guidance. Instead of just obstructing vision, they demand trust.

Angelvision focuses awareness on the edges of perception, where objects are sensed rather than seen, revealing nuances of sensitivity not normally explored.
