Peppermint Heaven – ‘Revolutions’ [Album Review]

Revolutions, the new album from L.A.-based synthpop/pop outfit Peppermint Heaven, showcases the duo’s ever-evolving sound, highlighted by venturing into innovative sonic territory.

Made up of Juno and Spark, Peppermint Heaven exploded on the scene in 2014, releasing their debut single, “Plenty of Time.” Since then, their trajectory has been upward, including multiple albums, EPs, singles, and remixes. With over 15 million streams on Spotify and features in an array of elite media outlets, their unique, retro sound has attracted legions of fans.

Revolutions encompasses eight tracks. Suggested entry points include “Superman,” which blends tints of ’80s pop with a funk-lite rhythm. Smooth, lustrous vocals imbue the lyrics with alluring tones as floating harmonies add soft, suffusing auras.

A personal favorite because of its pushing dance rhythm with hints of disco elements, “Fall In Love Again” rides a mid-tempo beat that invites listeners to move to the groove. There’s a shiny, gliding motion to the chromatic melody that captivates.

“Stay in The Season” reveals the duo’s fearless exploration of a fresh style: flavors of C-pop merged with subtle layers of bubbling, sparkly modern pop. Dreamy vocals evoke a deliciously appealing mood, at once wistful and hopeful.

Shoo-shoo-doo-wop backing harmonies infuse “Give Me a Reason” with a yummy ’60s feel, while the ’80s melody and soaring vocals add to the tune’s depth and dimension, injecting it with an ebullient, floating sensation.

Simultaneously buoyant and glittering, the closing track, “Nothing More Than Love,” offers coruscating colors atop a syncopated beat that delivers gentle, bouncing energy. Initially crisp vocals shift to atmospheric surfaces, giving the lyrics a luscious duality.
