Canadian composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Don Macdonald unveils Short Stories—a vibrant collection of original songs and imaginative re-interpretations that celebrate storytelling through jazz. Blending the intimacy of folk, the rhythmic vitality of jazz, and the emotional immediacy of great songwriting, Short Stories marks a striking new chapter in Macdonald’s multifaceted career.

Known internationally for his award-winning film and choral compositions, including the cult-classic Fido soundtrack and the opera KHAOS, Macdonald returns to his roots as a performer on this self-released album. His warm, expressive voice and deft saxophone and violin work are at the heart of the project, joined by a powerhouse ensemble: JUNO-winning guitarist Mike Rud, acclaimed pianist David Restivo, bassist Jill McKenna, drummer Joel Fountain, and guest appearances by Allison Girvan (voice) and Kiyo Elkuf (tenor sax).

Across ten tracks—seven originals and three inventive covers—Macdonald crafts vivid musical vignettes. From the rollicking, second-line groove of “Sofia’s Coming Out” to the moody balladry of “Fall From Grace” and a haunting rendition of Bob Dylan’s “One More Cup of Coffee,” the album pulses with character and narrative depth. Each song reveals Macdonald’s knack for melody and his fearless blending of genres, drawing on influences as diverse as Chet Baker, Django Reinhardt, and Madeleine Peyroux.

Short Stories was recorded with Macdonald’s colleagues and friends at the Selkirk College Contemporary Music and Technology Program in Nelson, BC, where he also teaches. The collaborative spirit of the project infuses every track, creating music that feels both sophisticated and deeply personal.
