Diane King Premieres Her Cheery “Love Like This” Music Video

With the release of her new album SKY on the way soon, Diane King is feeling a little triumphant. It’s been a long road to get to where she’s at, and despite the bumps along the way, she’s satisfied to be where she is. Today marks the premiere of the music video for the singer-songwriter’s new single “Love Like This.” It comes ahead of SKY, which will be formally released on September 19th.

An upbeat celebration of love and affection, “Love Like This” is the perfect second single for this album. It’s a happy song featuring infectious energy meant to make you dance and smile. As a songwriter, King can dole out the sad songs as well as anybody. But she took this opportunity to be a bit jubilant. Sometimes you’re fortunate enough to find the right person, and it all comes together easily. That’s what “Love Like This” is all about.

Discussing the song and video at length, King tells us:

“‘Love Like This’ was added to the SKY project on second thought. Deep into recording, I felt like the project needed another up-tempo song, so we pulled one of the slow songs and added ‘Love Like This.’ With each recorded instrument, vocal, and harmony track added, ‘Love Like This’ just kept rising to the top. We asked Aaron Currey (Wynonna Judd) to come in and play electric guitar for us. After his amazing guitar tracks were added, we knew it was a single!

“So, then, I started thinking about what I wanted to do for the video. I knew I wanted it to be fun and represent all kinds of love. Not just romantic love, but parent-child love, love for your pet, love between friends, all kinds. So, I thought, I love a fire pit, and it would be so cool to be sitting around one with friends and family, singing, eating, laughing, and having a big time! So that’s the direction I decided to go.

“We had everything lined up for the shoot, but that evening, we had terrible storms in Nashville and had to cancel. Most of the folks we had lined up for the original shoot, including the dog, weren’t available for the quick reschedule. So, we literally called a friend the day before the rescheduled shoot and asked her if she and her dog were available. Then she called her brother and his family, whom I had never met, on the day of the shoot to see if they were available. They headed to the video shoot that day and ended up being one of my favourite parts of the video! They were perfect, and the whole Conlee family, including Sheldon the dog, saved the day! I could not be happier with how the video turned out!”

Featuring ten new songs, SKY is a musically diverse album. It features three-part harmonies, a wide range of musicality, and a vast array of emotions. There’s the love and excitement of the first single, but also songs that reflect on the quiet pain of heartbreak. There’s real heart behind it, inspired by not just King’s upbringing as an artist, but also some challenges that life has thrown her way. A few years ago, shortly after forming the vocal trio Lorena, King was diagnosed with cancer. Suddenly, Lorena and any of her musical ventures were on the back burner. Four years of chemotherapy and treatment later, her cancer was finally deemed to be in remission.

Thanks to the trauma, it took even longer than that for King to get her voice back. Despite sufficiently recovering, she was cautious about a return to music until a couple of years ago, when some friends encouraged her to get back in the groove and record something new. Producer Stephan Oberhoff proved to be an invaluable asset as King’s primary collaborator on SKY. Armed with passion, joy, and a renewed sense of confidence, Diane King is back with a heartfelt, uncompromised record of some of her best work yet.
