In “Black Hats,” Del Roscoe trades in backporch warmth for something far more foreboding. The latest single from their forthcoming debut is a piece of musical theatre set in a dusty, imagined town where menace walks in plain sight.

Robert Lee’s lyrics paint the figure in broad strokes: a shadow passing through, armed with lies, fear, and the power to sway a crowd. It’s a character that feels pulled from history books and today’s headlines in equal measure. And like any good Southern gothic tale, the moral is clear without ever being overstated.

Musically, the band leans into its collective strengths. Tim Lee’s mandolin flickers like a warning lantern, Steve Thomas’ lap steel stretches the horizon, and Yanaëlle Cornez’s guitar lines snake around the beat with quiet menace. The arrangement leaves enough space for the listener’s imagination to fill in the rest of the scene.

“Black Hats” also carries the emotional weight of its making. Recorded during bassist Paul Abrelat’s final months, the track holds a sense of urgency that’s hard to fake. You can hear it in the locked-in rhythm section, the way the song wastes no time in finding its stride.

The single joins “A Few More Miles” and “Train Train” as early glimpses into Del Roscoe’s debut, out August 22nd on Waydrift Records. Together, they show a band comfortable in multiple emotional registers – from wistful reflection to intimate farewell to righteous defiance.

It’s rare to hear a debut project arrive this fully formed, but Del Roscoe has the advantage of lived experience. The members are seasoned players who understand how to let a song breathe while keeping the listener on the hook. “Black Hats” proves they can also turn up the tension when the story calls for it.

If the rest of the record keeps this balance of grit, narrative, and mood, Del Roscoe may have one of the year’s most compelling Americana releases on their hands.
