Circus Mind – “Barstool Hero” [Song Review]
On one level, engaging and simple, on another level complex, “Barstool Hero” takes on sonic mass as it builds to an impressive finale.
Indie-rock funk collective Circus Mind releases their latest single, “Barstool Hero,” which is also the title track of their forthcoming long player, slated for release this Fall.
Lead vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter Mark Rechler talks about how the song came together: “I honestly think I was in a trance when I wrote this one. I was sort of there but not really.”
Made up of Mark Rechler (keys, vocals), Brian Duggan (guitar), Michael Amendola (saxophone), Matt Fox (bass), Steve Finkelstein (percussion), and Dan Roth (drums), Circus Mind’s sound merges elements of reggae, rock, dub, jazz, and funk.
Circus Mind has recorded and shared the stage with Cyril Neville, Leo Nocentelli, Big Sam, Walter Wolfman Washington, and Rebirth Brass Band. The band has graced the stages at Jazz Fest, Fat Friday Annual Mardi Gras Ball, Brooklyn Bowl, The Capitol Theatre, and B.B. King’s.
“Barstool Hero” rolls out on a mellow reggae melody topped by Rechler’s rasping voice, revealing dark, slightly ominous tones. Multi-layered harmonies give the chorus a weighty size and dimension, followed by flowing into psychedelic textures. A searing, soaring guitar solo rides over the heavy piano, infusing the tune with retro grandiosity.
On one level, engaging and simple, on another level complex, “Barstool Hero” takes on sonic mass as it builds to an impressive finale.
