Newcastle indie-pop trio Bear Park return with their latest genre-bending offering, an electrifying cover of “Testify”, out today via 25 Hour Convenience Store, the label helmed by Gary Powell of The Libertines.

Originally a 2016 gospel house hit from British DJ HiFi Sean featuring Crystal Waters, the track is reborn as a jangly indie-rock anthem that radiates Bear Park’s trademark charm.

The single lands as the second release from the band’s forthcoming four-track covers EP GROWL (out September 26th), which sees the group reimagining an eclectic mix of tracks through their bright indie-pop lens.

On the subject of the single, guitarist Shay Bagnall says:

“Yeah, we have played this live a few times as well. Originally by Hi-Fi Sean and Crystal Waters, this is a fabulous dance track, hits the groove and delivers you directly to the dance floor.”

The guitarist adds:

“There is no way any of the three of us could match Crystal Waters’ vocals, but we have tried to keep the feel of the original and give it a Bear Park hug – we also injected a little rock n roll into the song.”

Following July’s explosive eight-minute take on “Teenage Bomb” featuring Brian Robertson of The Damned, “Testify” further showcases Bear Park’s skill for honouring the spirit of a track while reshaping it into something uniquely their own.

“Testify” is out now with GROWL follows on September 26th via 25 Hour Convenience Store.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
