Verse & Vision: Comparison Will Destroy You—Time to Suck It Up, Sweethearts!
Comparison will destroy you! Seriously! Stop comparing your writing to everyone else’s. As Mark Twain notes, “Comparison is the death of joy.”
Comparison will destroy you! Seriously! Stop comparing your writing to everyone else’s.
Let’s be honest—creatives like us are pros at second-guessing ourselves. Writers especially. We start thinking our stuff isn’t as good as someone else’s, and before we know it, we’re spiralling into “why am I even doing this?” mode. Here’s the deal: comparison will mess with your head fast. One minute, you’re feeling good about your story, and the next, you’re reading someone else’s polished chapter or watching them achieve success and suddenly, you’re wondering if you should even be a writer.
But listen—you’re not them, and they’re not you. Every writer has their own style, their own pace, and their own journey. What someone else is doing doesn’t take anything away from you. You’re telling your story in your voice, and that’s what makes it valuable.
It’s easy to forget that what we usually see is the final product—not the messy first drafts, the rewrites, the rejection emails, or the moments of doubt. So when you compare your work-in-progress to someone else’s polished book, you’re not comparing fairly. And honestly? It’s just not worth the mental bullshit.
Cheer for other writers. Be inspired by them. But don’t let their wins make you question your path. You’ve got your own thing going on, and it’s just as important.
Verse & Vision: Finding Your Muse (Without Losing Your Frikin’ Mind)
So next time that comparison monster creeps into your head, remind yourself: there’s room for all of us. You’re not behind. You’re not doing it wrong. You’re just on your path.
Keep your eyes on your own page. Keep the doubt demons at bay and write what’s inside of you. That’s when the magic happens.
I keep this quote close to remind me not to slip down the self-doubt rabbit hole:
