Driven by a shared passion for music and a deep musical bond, Time Thieves keep the momentum going with the release of their new music video for “Stare at the Sun.” Released as a single earlier this month, this is a cleverly put-together lyric/music video with plenty of retro appeal.  The song is from the Chicago power pop quartet’s upcoming EP If You Survive, which will be released on October 3rd.

This EP follows the band’s Come Home EP, which was released this past spring. From a songwriting point of view, it’s been a productive era for the band. They plan to combine If You Survive and Come Home and release them as one full-length project in the near future. It’d be their first full-length since their debut album Space was released in summer 2020.

Commenting on the song itself, lead singer and guitarist Jonathan Pool states:

“Thinking about summertime in the world in which we currently find ourselves, just staring into the sun en masse seems like the only thing left to do.”

Regarding the idea and the motivation for the music video, Pool adds:

“I generally think lyric videos are extremely boring and have never sat through an entire one myself, so I can’t imagine anyone else would either. People spewing out generative AI content just to have something to post is anathema to me, which is what a lot of that stuff is. But I do absolutely love the narrative karaoke videos from the ’90s that had their own story arcs and public access/bad acting vibes completely separate from the original song or video. So this is basically an ode to those old videos.”

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the formation of Time Thieves in Chicago. The band is the brainchild of Pool and his close friend, drummer Mike Oberlin. Each having a history of playing in numerous local punk bands, they kept in touch over the years about forming their own band that would be more specifically a power pop group. The possibility of focusing more on melody and songcraft while retaining the emotion and energy of punk really excited them. When they found bassist Annie Saunders and guitarist Tim Reynolds, Pool and Oberlin knew that they had the right personnel to pull off their ambition. All members of the band are highly accomplished musicians in their own right with years of experience playing in other bands.

Their songs aren’t flashy, but that’s not where the glory lies for Time Thieves. For them, it’s all about speaking to an audience and receiving a response back. Their songwriting is swift and nimble, with all of the right ingredients to get a rise out of a crowd. If you’re having fun and you’re feeling something, then as a band, Time Thieves is doing their job properly.
