Henry J. Star Announces the Release of His Debut Album ‘The Soft Apocalypse’

Henry J. Star is a self-discovery personified. The debut project of Knoxville-born musician, producer, and songwriter Devin Badgett, Henry J. Star is a tapestry of musical and personal influences — drawing from Japanese adventure games, ambient music, and Southern literature — that reflect Devin’s journey toward understanding himself.

Today, Henry J. Star announces his debut LP, The Soft Apocalypse, out October 17th via Acrophase Records. Alongside the announcement, he shares the album’s debut single, “Greenway,” a dreamy and emotionally charged coming-of-age anthem, written as an offering to the younger version of himself. Relatable and hook-laden, “Greenway” pulses with raw, intense emotion.

Commenting on “Greenway,” Star states:

“It’s about grief. I was mourning the past and my inner child while trying to reconcile my imagined future with the current reality at hand. This song was, in many ways, the final piece of the puzzle.”

Written, produced, and largely performed by Badgett himself in bedrooms and basements across his home state, The Soft Apocalypse is a bold realization of his sonic vision — one made possible through a deep well of personal experience and the support of close collaborators. The album emerges from the weight of Badgett’s childhood: the incarceration of his father, the complex experience of his multi-racial identity, and the loneliness of urban sprawl. Music, like fantasy, became a portal.

A worn-out family copy of The NeverEnding Story gave a young Devin his first glimpse into another world — a spark that would eventually ignite a lifelong fascination with escapism and imagination. It was, he says, “perhaps the first time I believed that a better world was not only possible, but worth fighting for.”
