Whitechapel & Northlane Put on a Metal Clinic in Bristol [Photos]

The British festival season can throw up some wonderful gig lineups in unexpected venues [1], with Whitechapel and Northlane dual headlining the freshly rebranded Electric Bristol (previously SWX, now joining a growing group of venues nationwide) the day after Download Festival, giving fans the chance to catch two huge international bands on a balmy Monday evening.

If the queue formed prior to doors is an indication, plenty of people are excited to see tonight’s openers Profiler, and the reaction of the crowd when they kick into their set marks that as true. They bring a modern take to nu-metal to the night’s proceedings, mixing uber heavy riffs, rap segments and big choruses to great effect. The audience in attendance are thoroughly warmed ready for the rest of the evening, and this band are certainly marked for bigger things in the future.

Northlane take the middle slot this evening, with their tech-metalcore meets Linkin Park beats landing with far greater impact than on record; the depth in the tone of their guitars is extraordinary, whilst vocalist Marcus Bridge conducts the crowd between swaying and furious headbanging depending on what the track demands. A mixture of crowd surfers and moshers fill the room throughout their set, with the roars between tracks demonstrating they have many fans in attendance, be that from prior or made this evening.

At almost 10pm on a Monday night (showing my age there) Whitechapel enter the stage to provide what’s easily the heaviest display of the evening; the Deathcore pioneers and now true Death Metal royalty begin a spectacle that’s sure to blow away newcomers, and come as no surprise to those who’ve seen the Tennessee 6 piece before. Blending tracks old and new through a triumphant setlist, they put on a clinic in brutality; Phil Bozeman’s vocals as flawless as ever and the sheer number of quality riffs on display in just an hour the envy of any band in the metal genre.
