It has been a fast-paced year for the South Korean indie rock band, wave to earth. Following the conclusion of their European tour in early May 2025, the band is charging into summer with a packed schedule that includes performances at major festivals like Governors Ball and Bonnaroo.

The band, consisting of singer-songwriter and guitarist Daniel Kim, drummer Dong Kyu Shin (Dong Q), and bassist John Cha, took the stage for two sold-out performances at the iconic Blue Note Jazz Club on Thursday, June 5th, as part of the “Gov Ball After Dark” series. With an early show at 6:00 pm and a late show at 10:00 pm, the energy carried well into the night.

By the time doors opened for the late show, anticipation was already buzzing outside the venue. Fans lined the block, eagerly waiting to experience wave to earth in one of New York’s most intimate and historic music spaces.

The Blue Note’s cozy, close quarters setup proved the perfect backdrop for wave to earth’s atmospheric sound. At exactly 10:30 pm, the lights dimmed, and the trio walked on stage, joined by saxophonist Jeon-min, whose presence elevated the band’s jazz-influenced textures, perfectly suiting the venue’s legacy.

The show opened with “are you bored?,” the smooth lo-fi and synth-pop instrumental and the first track from the band’s latest album Play with Earth! 0.03. The song was a playful invitation, getting the audience excited for what was ahead.

They followed up with the upbeat “play with earth!” and the jazz-infused and dreamy single “peach eyes,” mesmerizing the crowd. Each song was delivered with emotional precision, keeping the audience engaged.

One of the highlights of the show was the intricate and powerful guitar solo during “beck,” which ignited a wave of cheers and applause from the audience. Dong Q took over with explosive jazz drumming, never missing a beat and also earning admiration from the crowd. The band’s chemistry was undeniable—each member playing off the others with intuitive ease, breathing life into every song through their synergy.

wave to earth added a unique flair to the performance by playing the mysterious “akira” live on guitar for the very first time. The track, inspired by the dystopian anime film Akira, offered a moody and cinematic interlude that felt both experimental and introspective. It’s moments like that that make live shows unforgettable, giving fans something truly unique.

Towards the end of the show, the band paused to express their gratitude. Daniel shared that it was an honour to perform at the Blue Note, acknowledging the venue’s significant role in jazz history.

The night wound down with the soft and heartfelt “love.” and the crowd-pleasing “annie.,” with fans singing along in unison. The atmosphere was calm and warm, like a quiet embrace.

Instrumentals played a key role throughout the night, highlighting the technical skill and expressive power of each band member. Even toward the end of the set, each musician took time to say goodbye with individual solos, offering an emotional and artful conclusion.

For the encore, the band asked the audience for song requests. Fans responded overwhelmingly with “light.” The beloved fan favourite was the perfect finale to a cathartic evening, echoing the warmth of the summer night, the soft glow of the moon, and the shared sincerity between the band and audience in a fleeting and ethereal moment.

With performances like this, it’s clear that wave to earth’s success is no accident. Their live presence is a testament to their artistry, blending lo-fi, indie rock, jazz, and synth-pop into a personal and universally resonant sound. As they continue to captivate audiences worldwide, the band’s creative momentum shows no signs of slowing, propelling their musical journey to new heights.
