Book Review
“The Wife Upstairs” by Freida McFadden [Book Review]
If you’re into fast-paced, twisty, binge-worthy thrillers, then Freida McFadden’s “The Wife Upstairs” is a very worthwhile read.
It’s tricky to leave a review without spoilers, but I’ll give it a shot!
Straight up, The Wife Upstairs (buy it here) totally sucked me in from the first few pages. I picked it up thinking I’d read a chapter or two before bed, and yeah… next thing I know, it’s 2 am and I’m still reading. No regrets, though—this book is engaging in the best way.
So, the story kicks off with this woman, Sylvia, who gets a new gig as a caregiver for this rich guy’s wife, who’s supposedly upstairs recovering from an accident. But here’s the thing: everything about this house—and this man—is sketchy from the jump. The guy’s name is Adam, and he’s all charm and mystery, but very quickly, you get a vibe that he’s hiding something. And the wife? Well… let’s just say things aren’t exactly what they seem.
The novel is very Jane Eyre meets Gone Girl—classic Gothic with a modern, super-twisty psychological thriller spin. Freida McFadden knows exactly how to mess with your head. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, she’s like “LOL nope!” and hits you with another twist. Some parts are so tense that I was literally holding my breath.
What I love most, though, is that Sylvia is no pushover. She’s messy, she’s got secrets, she makes dumb choices—but she feels real. And the moral gray areas? Wicked! No one is completely innocent in this book, which makes the story believable.
If you’re into fast-paced, twisty thrillers that make you question every character’s motives (and your own sanity a little), definitely give this one a shot. It’s binge-worthy, addictive, and just the right amount of mind-fuckery.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 “what-the-heck-did-I-just-read” moments.
