Wow—I just had my mind blown! The Door in the Wall (buy it here) by H.G. Wells is a brilliant read that made me question how much of life I might be missing by chasing societal “success” instead of my own kind of magic. Wells absolutely nails the human condition: Lionel Wallace’s struggle between adult responsibilities and childhood wonder hit me like a punch to the gut. The story’s voice is deceptively simple, yet it’s an emotional knockout that stuck with me long after the story ended.

This short tale straight-up inspired me as a writer. Wells’ ability to weave profound themes with just a few vivid details—like that mysterious green door—taught me how to pack so much into so little. It’s pure literary genius. Since reading it, I’ve been obsessed with leaving space for open-ended questions and letting readers feel more than they know. Wells didn’t just tell a story; he challenged me to think, feel, and write deeper. A kick-ass wordsmith with an incredible ability to see inside all of us. I’m now on a mission to read his other works! My rating on this short story: 10 out of 10!
