Sunset Lines – “Can’t Sleep” [Song Review]
On “Can’t Sleep,” Sunset Lines infuses the revered sound of the ‘80s with modernized flair, resulting in an oh-so-enticing song.
Synth-pop outfit Sunset Lines releases their latest single/music video, “Can’t Sleep,” a track from their forthcoming debut album, The Longest Day In June, set for release later this year.
Talking about the upcoming album, songwriter/vocalist Liz Brooks says, “The songs on this record speak to rediscovering myself and my creativity. It’s something of a catalog of that time—the ups and downs, the freedom, and the restlessness.”
Hailing from San Francisco, along with Brooks (vocals, synth), Sunset Lines is made up of Paul McCorkle (guitar, synth), Greg Wieman (drums), and Brett Wiltshire (bass).
Originally written by Wiltshire, Brooks, and McCorkle revised the song a bit, adding a big chorus and other nuances. According to Brooks, the lyrics narrate a relationship that begins clandestinely, revealing the electrifying feelings accompanying it.

Opening on ’80s synth-pop layers topped by Brooks’ fluid, velvety vocals, “Can’t Sleep” summons up suggestions of The Motels coalesced with Book Of Love. Blending tints of psych-pop and new wave, the melody shimmers and pulses with soft, shiny surfaces. Stacked harmonies suffuse the tune with deliciously dreamy flavors. As seductive as the melody is, it’s Brooks’ voice that makes the song magically alluring.
