Colorado musical group Starlight and Pine just released their first song of the year, “Rattlesnake”—a smooth, emotional track with a steady feel—and a dash of heartbreak.

Fronted by the married couple Amber Starlight and Kim Godard, the band mixes soft rock & folk with influences from the 70’s music era to create their sound. Amber’s vocals come off as authentic, and the group’s harmonies give their sound a full, warm sound.

“I’m not ready, burned by my mistake . . . on my knees I can’t see straight”

“Rattlesnake” paints the picture of being left behind—being stuck in the pain while someone else gets away clean. Lyrics like “I’m not ready, burned by my mistake,” and “on my knees I can’t see straight” show someone overwhelmed by the aftermath of a sudden departure. The imagery of a “rattlesnake” and being “struck by lightning” tells of danger or betrayal that came fast and unexpectedly.

In Kim’s words, “This song almost wrote itself . . . we had a super-simple chord pattern for the verse, and once we started on the basic lyric idea, the rest just flowed out quickly. The hook felt right and everything else just flowed.”

The song leans slightly more pop than some of their older songs, but it still holds true to the character of the band. Honest lyrics, mature musicality, and a memorable chorus.
