We’re thrilled to welcome Sam Sussman for a very special in-person event celebrating his debut novel, “Boy From the North Country,” coming from Penguin Press in September 2025.
Part mystery, part memory, and all heart, this novel is already being hailed as a modern classic of emotional fiction.
Set in a quiet farmhouse in upstate New York, Boy From the North Country follows 26-year-old Evan as he returns home to care for his dying mother, June, and discovers the sweeping, painful, and beautiful truths she’s kept hidden. From a rumored past romance with Bob Dylan to the secrets that shaped Evan’s own identity, the novel is an exploration of legacy, loss, and the delicate threads that tie parents to their children.
Kirkus calls it “the most beautiful and moving mother-son story in recent memory.”
Tony Kushner says it’s “a work of stunning poetic force.”
David Yaffe calls it “a monumental event” — for Dylan fans and beyond.
Sad Dads Book Club was drawn in by the novel’s emotional gravity and lyrical precision; a story that speaks to the quiet griefs and unspoken questions we carry, and the redemptive possibility of connection, even at the edge of goodbye.
We’ll gather at P&T Knitwear, one of our favorite spaces for bookish community in NYC, for a conversation with Sam about memory, music, maternal love, and writing through complicated truths. Bring your questions. Bring a friend. Bring tissues. Come celebrate this extraordinary debut as it hits shelves.
