Last week, multi-faceted hip-hop artist/producer Roderick Porter unveiled his latest single, “Balance,” featuring R&B breakout vocalist Phabo via Warner Music Canada. Now, he shares the stunning and vibrant music video directed by Porter and frequent collaborators Northside Hollow and Bish.

In “Balance,” Porter delves into the struggle with self-medication, inner demons, and the inability to escape a damaging relationship, conveying a profound sense of instability and helplessness. This track highlights his artistic growth and follows his latest releases “Du$k,” “Not Again,” and “Phases.” He delivers polished and detailed production, and his lyrics are deeper, revealing both strength and vulnerability. Each new release underscores Porter’s artistic evolution, building a compelling body of work that establishes him as a noteworthy rising artist.

The laid-back track explores themes of internal struggle and toxic relationships. On the song coming together, Roderick Porter explains,

“‘Balance’ is my favourite song I’ve ever made, and felt like a milestone in my creative journey in terms of artistry. It became the North Star for my sonic world, and it’s the first thing I show anyone I do a session with. I love that it’s in a 6/8 time signature, which is typically more R&B but creates such interesting flows that sparked a lot of refreshing inspiration for me. Something about the stop-and-go drum pattern is just so addicting. I love choppiness when it comes to the percussion on songs, and ‘Balance’ is one of the best examples of it.

“Phabo is an incredible lyricist. It’s really hard to find a writer that I can mesh with in terms of lyrical taste so flawlessly. He was originally supposed to just be a session writer for this song, but when he went to record some reference vocals for me to sing on the hook, I asked him if he’d be willing to jump on the song as an artist, and I’m so glad he did.”
