One look at Jesika von Rabbit, and you hear just one snippet of a song, and you immediately know that she was born to do what she does. That impression is only accentuated even more as you make your way through her new album, Bunnywood Babylon. Her third studio release, Jesika’s new record, comes out on June 13th via Dionysus Records. Ahead of the record release, she reveals her latest single, “Pretty Dum.”

Commenting on the song, Jesika states:

“‘Pretty Dum’ is one of my favourite tracks off the new album. It was the last song added to the collection and came to me suddenly one afternoon, almost subconsciously urging me to get it out. It’s vulnerable, it’s self-deprecating, it’s honest, but it’s also fun and lighthearted. I think it makes a great opening track and sets the tone for the rest of the album; it’s rustic meets groovy swirl.”

Her bassist, Lee Joseph, adds:

“Our new album Bunnywood Babylon is like an ornate two-story house, each room has a different theme, all decorated by the same person, Jesika von Rabbit. The opening track, ‘Pretty Dum,’ is the entryway where you walk in and see a painting depicting Jeskia von Rabbit contemplating. What is she contemplating? The world around her, and her past, present, and future. It’s also a very catchy tune that many of us can relate to!”

When you hear the songs, you can tell she poured every drop of her heart into them. The record comes as very personal to her, like a journal entry she is sharing with the world. Topics and themes that she covers include self-deprecation, love, loss, and finger-pointing. Jesika may come across as bold, and that’s essentially her intention. She is provocative and cheeky, yet thoughtful and down to earth. Jesika oversaw the entire writing and recording process for Bunnywood Babylon, and she also co-produced it, along with Ethan Allen.

When she sets out to write and record new music, Jesika is not looking to sound like everyone else, which is why Bunnywood Babylon transcends much musical space and time. You might describe the record as retro-futuristic. Some of it seems familiar, but much of it is pretty off the wall, too. It’s like a combination of classic Americana, psychedelia, and future pop. There’s lots of retro ‘80s flavour here to keep any fan of that generation of music happy.

But there’s also a modern electronic pop influence that doesn’t make the record sound out of place when compared to other modern pop acts. There’s a hint of rockabilly in these songs that gives them a bit of a country feel. Really, it’s a sound that would feel good in any time period in which it was present. It speaks to the wide range of influences that Jesika grew up on. Complex, sexy, and with just the right amount of quirk, Bunnywood Babylon comes across as grand, dazzling, and very colourful.
