Grace Kay – “What You Wanted” [Song Review]
Tinged with flavors of Nashville and LA synth-pop, “What You Wanted” (Trailing Twelve Records) is intimately vulnerable and refreshingly listenable.

Los Angeles-based indie-pop singer-songwriter Grace Kay unveils her brand-new single, “What You Wanted,” a song about that ah-ha moment you realize your identity revolves around the praise of others.
“‘What You Wanted’ is a pop-country-inspired track that pairs a playful, satirical tone with a deeper reflection on the habit of people-pleasing,” says Kay. “It explores the ways I’ve tried to mold myself into what I thought others wanted—only to realize that version of me wasn’t serving anyone.”
A native of Los Angeles, Kay attended an all-girls high school, followed by studying acting at the University of Southern California, followed by roles in short films and mini-series, which showed her the power of story not only on the screen but in songwriting.
In 2022, Kay released her EP, Open, followed a year later by Grace’s Gospel, her debut long player. Along with being featured in elite media outlets and appearing on leading playlists, Kay’s sync placements include ABC’s A Million Little Things, CBS’s True Lies, and MTV’s West Coast Hustle.
“What You Wanted” opens on shimmering, dreamy tones that roll into a tight, crisp rhythm topped by a gently undulating melody dipped in rippling, chiming textures. Hints of country pop give the tune a beguiling sensation as Kay’s evocative vocals imbue the lyrics with poignancy. It’s one of those voices just different enough to stay with you; and for some reason, it summons up memories of Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks because of Kay’s charming and unique way of phrasing.
