Track-by-Track: Chavar Dontae Talks Up His EP ‘Too Much’

Littered throughout his new EP Too Much is evidence of the varied and diverse musical tastes that Chavar Dontae has injected into his own music. Today marks the release of the singer-songwriter’s latest piece of work. You may have caught a taste of the EP with the recent release of the single “Rain.” Throughout the EP, Dontae artfully stitches together his cultured musical background, blending together his influences and how they have affected his musical tendencies. The EP features all sorts of rich melodies, sharp riffs, and pleasant sounds. It also features a unified positive approach. There’s a hopeful message throughout these five songs, a nice reprieve from the constant stream of global negativity we are faced with each day.

Based on the West Coast, Dontae leans on his Brazilian roots for inspiration. He was raised in the Midwest before moving to Los Angeles after graduating from music school. Based on those roots, Dontae comes across as a very grounded artist. He leans on his own personal experiences that have made him the man he is today. It’s the real-life scenarios, struggles, and triumphs that he looks to for musical inspiration. And he’s the type of artist who is versatile enough to do just about any style.

Today, we are pleased to be joined by Dontae for a special Track-by-Track rundown of his new EP Too Much.

1. “Too Much”

“I wrote this song about a time I was feeling isolated. Even when I was around a plethora of people, there was still a longing for something more. The feeling of someone knowing of me but not knowing my essence as a human being, was ‘Too Much.’”

2. “All White M1”

“On the surface, the song is about a rare BMW Motorsports car. Only 453 were made, including the pro car versions. At its true essence, it is a redemption song. The song tells the story of having a chill, fun night in LA that turns into being bombarded with people coming around for the wrong reasons. Those who only want to be around because of the newfound success. The fact that those types see me as rare and unattainable, ‘All White M1,’ intensifies their clout chasing because they can’t believe I gained success.”

3. “Rain”

“‘Rain’ is a story about two people who have to overcome mindsets of mediocrity to follow their dreams. It paints a picture of self-belief in the midst of naysayers while chasing their true calling in life. The chorus gives the honesty of life raining on your parade, but not to give up. That there’s going to be loads of pain, but to keep going. Rain ends with a big guitar solo.”

4. “I’ll Be Fine”

“‘I’ll Be Fine’ is a letter from a father to a young child that hopefully will be understood later in life. The song expresses trying to figure things out as a parent. It also deals with the emotional guilt of making little mistakes along the way. The feeling that the sun won’t shine again. In the end, everything is ok; it just hurts sometimes. ‘I’ll Be Fine’ is tied to the song ‘Rain’ on the EP.”

5. “The Remedy”

“‘The Remedy’ paints a picture of a once platonic friend coming around for more, once they see my success. After experiencing a plethora of heartache, looking for validation from a material and unforgiving world. In the end, finding out that that lifestyle was a dead end.”
