As an artist, it’s always a good idea to change things up from time to time, and that’s what Burp. has decided to do with their brand new single “Stars.” For all of you Burp. aficionados, you would know that the band is more well-known for their higher energy, more aggressive material.

“Stars” is not that, an acoustic emo ballad that shows the band’s versatility. Burp. typically pulls no punches with their style of Midwestern emo-punk. It’s emblematic of a band that is evolving, feeling the confidence to try new things and not be chained to any particular musical style. It’s an impressive range of sound, particularly for a band whose hometown is Boston.

Sharing his thoughts on the unexpected origins of the new song, singer and guitarist Leo Folan states:

“‘Stars’ is a change of pace for Burp, sonically. I wrote this about two Resident Evil characters that I always thought would end up together. They never romantically did anything, but there was clearly a connection! This is written from the perspective of a female character who is under mind control in one of the games. Basically, she is trapped inside her own mind, and this is her singing to the brainwashed version of herself.”

Burp. is driven by friendship, which you can hear in their collegial sound. The band started as a group of friends messing around with instruments with no real distant goal in sight. Those basement sessions led to some musical chemistry taking shape and then some local gigs. Their sound is a combination of 1990s pop-punk and 2010s emo. It’s a sound that carries a wide appeal, which helped begin to fill the rooms when they played live.

They released their self-titled debut album in 2023. They released the follow-up Acid Reflux last September, featuring lots of radio-friendly hooks and introspective lyrics. Each song emphasized the band’s growth as a unit. Ultimately, their friendship has led them to this point, a band starting to really see their audience blossom, all the while fortified by their personal bond with each other. This is what being in a band is all about.
