Bonneville Delivers Retro-Future Funk with Latest Single “Flying Machine”

Retro-soul trailblazers Bonneville have released their highly anticipated single “Flying Machine,” the title track from their forthcoming sophomore album (via Starita Records). Known for their warm, groove-driven sound steeped in Southern roots and classic soul legacy, Bonneville now takes a bold sonic leap forward—blending electronic funk, live instrumentation, and a deep emotional core to create a track that’s equal parts dreamy dance groove and introspective anthem.

Written by guitarist, songwriter, and co-producer Jeff Hayashi in a moment of late-night inspiration while watching his young son gaze at the moon, “Flying Machine” is a heartfelt exploration of childhood wonder and adult disillusionment.

Hayashi shares:

“I wanted to convey the emotion of imagination that children feel when pretending or playing, but from the perspective of an adult who has lost that connection.”

That spirit became the creative fuel for a lush, post-disco soundscape, channelling the essence of Jamiroquai, Cymande, and Stevie Wonder.

Lead vocalist and co-writer Wes McGee brings the theme full circle with an expressive vocal performance that moves from airy and nostalgic to powerful and aching.

McGee says:

“It’s about how we all have the ability to rise higher than who we are. We can choose not to be constrained by what others expect of us. I wanted the vocals to capture that feeling of dreaming—and the desperate need for something more.”

Sonically, “Flying Machine” marks a new chapter for Bonneville, leaning into electronic textures, MIDI layering, and future-forward production under the guidance of GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Starita, who helped the band sculpt a danceable yet deeply felt track.

Starita comments:

“We were going for a classic-meets-the-future sort of vibe. This song allowed me to really blend synths with a live rhythm section in a way that feels both timeless and forward-looking.”
