Zarema Premieres Her Powerful “I Hold You Child” Music Video
Alternative artist Zarema premieres her music video for “I Hold You Child,” inspired by stories of mothers and children displaced by war.
With Mother’s Day upon us this weekend, Zarema has found her own way of honouring the importance of family. Today, she unveils her powerful new music video for “I Hold You Child.”
Operatic and moving, the video clip for the song is simple and straightforward. It primarily features Zarema singing the song with all of her heart put into it, mixed with shots of mothers with their young children. The official release of the song will come tomorrow on Mother’s Day, not a conventional day for a single release, but a day that made sense for the moving nature and significance of the song.
Discussing the song, Zarema states:
“As a member of an ethnic minority whose people were exiled from their homeland for three generations, this subject resonates strongly with me, as I remember the many stories of my grandparents and the horrors that they endured. In our darkest days, we all need empathy and compassion. I believe there is never ‘someone else’s child’ in a war. Every child in a war is our own child. We need to treat these innocent children as our own and cherish, comfort and protect them.”
Although it is generally intended for mothers, “I Hold You Child” was specifically inspired by real stories of mothers and their children displaced by war. It’s a sad reality that each year tens of thousands of parents and their children are forced to flee their homes as a result of war and local conflicts. A gothic ballad, Zarema intended the song to be a tribute to resilience and love despite unthinkable hardship. And these aren’t just actors; the mothers and children featured in the video are actual refugees. Many of them were recently forced to flee active war zones. The video was brought together by the highly regarded filmmaker Mark Klasfeld.
Also an actress, Zarema was born in Crimea and started writing songs as a child. She is now based in Los Angeles, but remains very active in the goings-on of her homeland. She is a unique songwriter because of her life experiences. Not many artists can blend cultural memory and cinematic storytelling at such a level. She first started to discover success in Ukraine and Turkey and was soon performing for audiences as large as 20,000 people. Remarkably, Zarema only began to learn English a little over a decade ago. Fluent in five languages, she has been highly sought after as a voice actor as a result.
It would be an understatement to say that Zarema is multi-talented. But at this time, she is hyper-focused on her musical career, particularly as an English artist. Zarema’s story is one that is both inspirational and unbelievable. It’s a testament to the importance of resilience and rising up in the face of adversity.
