Every Monday evening, The Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis becomes a haven for jazz enthusiasts, hosting its renowned Monday Night Jazz Jam sessions. These gatherings are more than just performances; they are celebrations of improvisation, mentorship, and jazz culture. This synergy provides a solid foundation, inviting a diverse array of musicians to join in and create spontaneous musical dialogues.

Among the standout performers commanding the stage are trumpeter Jefri Payne and saxophonist Mark O’Connor.

Jefri Payne, affectionately known as “Jef with one f,” hails from Gary, Indiana. His passion for the trumpet led him to the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Beyond performing, Jefri has dedicated nearly three decades to music education, teaching various disciplines in public schools. He also leads The Jef Payne Quartet, showcasing his commitment to both performance and mentorship.

Mark O’Connor, the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Indianapolis, brings a rich background in jazz performance and education. With a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Illinois, Mark has been an integral part of the Chicago and Milwaukee jazz scenes. His performances often pay homage to jazz legends, blending soulful melodies with contemporary flair.

The Monday Night Jazz Jam sessions at The Jazz Kitchen offer a unique opportunity to witness such talents in an intimate setting. Whether you’re a seasoned jazz aficionado or a newcomer, these evenings promise unforgettable musical experiences.
