In a society fraught with adversity, we need outlets like music and artists like Curtis Nowosad to help us get by. You’re bound to get some good vibes from his new single “Carry You Home.” Today, we help debut the official music video for the song, a mix of performance clips and old home movie clips from when Nowosad was a child.

For Nowosad, the song comes from a very personal place, written for both his two-year-old son and his younger self. You might think of “Carry You Home” as the musical version of a pat on the back. It’s the singer-songwriter’s attempt at providing a slice of care and comfort to those who need it. It was written by Nowosad, along with one of his oldest friends, Joey Landreth, and features vocalist Joanna Majoko. Lending his talents as a backup singer and guitarist, Landreth has had his own standout career in music as part of The Bros. Landreth, a Juno Award-winning duo featuring his brother David.

Discussing the writing of the song and the accompanying music video, Nowosad states:

“I wrote ‘Carry You Home’ a little over a year ago, when my son was a little over a year old, as a way of expressing some things that I want him to grow up knowing—as well as some things that I want the younger ‘me’ to know as well. Most of the chorus and first verse came to me all at once—unsurprisingly, directly after a therapy session—and album co-producer/singer-songwriter-guitarist extraordinaire Joey Landreth helped me turn it into an honest-to-goodness song (as well as blessing the track with his voice and guitar).

“The video is a mix of recording studio footage and recently digitized home movies from late 1990, when my family was living in London, UK, through the end of 1991 and our move to Winnipeg, where I grew up. The home movies are particularly special to me because my son is the exact same age now (two years and nine months) that I was in the first clip that appears in the video; there’s something poetic about that, I think.”

“Carry You Home” is off of Nowosad’s latest album, I Am Doing My Best. His fourth proper LP, it’s scheduled for release in June via La Reserve Records. Nowosad views music as having many therapeutic qualities. In a world that’s so demanding, Nowosad believes that if we can focus on healing ourselves, we can create a kinder, gentler society that will extend itself throughout future generations. The lyrics found on the album focus a lot on self-compassion and being good to yourself. By accomplishing this, you can then be the person that your child needs you to be. Values are very important to Nowosad, and he sees faith as a crucial element in warding off self-doubt and indecision.

Nowosad has long been a fixture of the jazz scene in New York City, performing with many special artists. But I Am Doing My Best is his opportunity to carve out his own little niche. It’s his first album to feature all original music. It’s also his first opportunity to say things he wants to say in the way he wants to say them. Change is the only constant in life, and Nowosad has really embraced that point of view, both in his musical career and as a person.
