London hardcore/metal act, ButcherBird, are dropping their brand-new single this week, “Be The Rabbit,” ahead of their highly-anticipated debut EP, Drought/Deluge, set to release on May 30th, 2025 via Drowning Sea God Records.

Following the success of their first single, “Trajan’s Massive Column,” released last month, the band continues to carve out their distinct, chaotic soundscape. Guitarist Rob brings a signature touch to the band’s sound with his DIY pedal creations, injecting peculiar noises and dissonance into the riffs. Combined with Chaz’s explosive drumming and the ferocious vocal delivery, the track channels the unrestrained energy of influences like Botch, Converge, The Chariot, Every Time I Die, and Heck.

Known for their gritty, unpredictable compositions, ButcherBird’s sound is built around the philosophy that songs—like human emotions—should never be clean or predictable. “Be The Rabbit” embodies this ethos, delivering a pummeling wall of sound interspersed with unexpected shifts, noise-laden riffs, and raw intensity.

Speaking about the track, the band said:

“‘Be The Rabbit’ is one of the earliest songs we wrote together, and has a lot of the musical elements we love: Balancing fast chaotic elements with slower melodic builds, and trying to bring out something human in the mix. The track went through a lot of iterations as we refined it – tearing sections apart and gluing them back together again – at one point it featured a sample of ‘Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)’ by Looking Glass!

On meaning of the song and the title:

“Lyrically, it’s about how far a human can be pushed without letting go of their values. It’s easy to take personal freedom for granted, but a look around the world today shows how easily that’s lost. The title comes from the film JoJo Rabbit and the lyrics draw from books like The Ten Types of Human by Dexter Dias and visiting the former Khmer Rouge political prison in Cambodia – all points where people who may have otherwise lived ordinary lives ended up being swept up in mass hysteria and committed unthinkable acts. The song is a call to arms to stop this from happening again.”

The upcoming EP, Drought/Deluge, promises to showcase more of ButcherBird’s distinct blend of hardcore aggression and unconventional musicianship. With “Be The Rabbit” out later this week, fans can brace themselves for the full impact when the EP drops on May 30th.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
