Bill Greenberg – “Swear To God” [Song Review]

New York City-based folk singer-songwriter Bill Greenberg recently released his latest single/music video, “Swear To God,” a song about the struggle to break free from addiction. Some manage to pull off the task, while others fall short.

Talking about the song, Greenberg says, “There’s always a choice. Prayer sometimes helps….so they say.”

The lyrics narrate the pronouncements of those who intend to throw off the chains of dependence. They tell themselves, and those they care about, why they will.

“Swear To God” opens on a low-slung, despairing guitar attended by a wonderfully desolate harmonica. Greenberg’s vocals, vaguely reminiscent of Johnny Cash in tempo and phrasing, suffuse the lyrics with weighty assertions of resolve. Yet for all the rigor of their determination, there’s an elusive hollowness that portends defeat.

“I swear to God / I’m getting help / I’m gonna stop / I’m gonna change / Trust me now / I’m on my way.”

The video depicts a man imprisoned in the grip of alcohol, a vice that won’t let him go despite the support of his wife. A shadow of aching hopelessness envelopes the visuals, leaving viewers to wonder if he succeeds or not.

Profoundly moving, with “Swear To God,” Bill Greenberg captures the sensation of being lost in a world with one obsession.
